LASIK surgery has one of the easiest recoveries of all eye surgeries. However, even for how easy it is, you still need to take some precautions to ensure you no complications arise. If you are considering LASIK surgery, you may also be wondering – “What exactly does LASIK recovery look like?”
At Feinerman Vision, we understand that knowledge is the key to feeling comfortable with any surgery. Many people feel nervous before LASIK surgery, but we find that a good knowledge of what happens after the surgery is great for peace of mind.
Let’s discuss what you can expect from your LASIK recovery, from the minutes after your surgery to months later.
The First 30 Minutes
Directly after the procedure with Dr. Feinerman, you will rest for a short while before going home. The numbing eye drops given to you before the procedure will last around 30 minutes, give or take. You will be given protective goggles to use while sleeping and in the hours after surgery. Dr. Feinerman will also send you off with all medications you will need for recovery. You will need someone there to drive you home from the procedure.
When You Get Home
When you get home, it is recommended that you take a few hours to rest. The anesthetic eye drops will begin to wear off, and you may feel some discomfort such as grittiness and dryness. It is very important that you do not rub your eyes. Be sure to wear your protective goggles, and use medicated eye drops as directed by Dr. Feinerman.
The Day After Surgery
The morning after your LASIK surgery, you can remove your protective goggles. You will need to attend your first of a series of follow-up appointments with Dr. Feinerman this day. Be sure to inform him of any side-effects you have experienced, and ask any questions you may have. Make sure there is someone to drive you to your follow-up appointment. Dr. Feinerman will assess if it is safe for you to drive during the appointment.
One Week Post-Op
You will have your second follow-up appointment with Dr. Feinerman one week after your surgery. At this time, Dr. Feinerman will tell you if you can resume wearing makeup and playing sports/exercising. Your vision should have made significant improvements during this time.
Two Weeks Post-Op
After you hit the two-week mark, you should be able to return to swimming and getting your face wet. It is ok to get a little bit of water in your eyes, but it should still be avoided.
Generally, you will be asked to three more follow-up appointments to ensure you are healing correctly – one at the one month mark, another at the 6-month mark, and one more after one year. These appointments are important to making sure no complications arise and that your vision is at its best!
