The natural lens in the eye can vary its focus from distance to near for people who are younger than 45 years old. This process is called accommodation. As people age, the natural lens contained within the eye begins to lose its flexibility and is unable to focus on objects up close. This condition, called presbyopia, is why reading the newspaper or a menu in a restaurant gets harder as people gets older. Fortunately, there is a new alternative to cumbersome reading glasses. The crystalens is a lens implant that provides successful treatment of presbyopia, and it is offered by Newport Beach, Orange County doctor Gregg Feinerman.
Crystalens is the only FDA approved accommodative IOL (intraocular lens). It works by bending to focus on near objects, mimicking the eyes natural accommodation mechanism. It restores youthful vision to our Orange County residents suffering from presbyopia and cataracts.
When you focus on distance objects your eye’s focusing muscle is relaxed. When you attempt to focus on your laptop, the focusing muscle of your eye contracts, allowing your lens to bend and see your computer clearly. The crystalens mimics the eye’s natural lens, bending to focus on near objects, and relaxing to focus at distance. Thus, crystalens generally provides clear vision at near, far, and everything in between.
Crystalens is designed for patients with an active lifestyle, who want to decrease their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Dr. Feinerman was the first surgeon in Orange County to perform crystalens after it was FDA approved in 2003. He has performed the most crystalens surgeries in California.
“Crystalens is my lens of choice for pilots because it allows them to seamlessly vary their focus from distance to the instrument panel without depending on glasses. Its aspheric design also provides better night vision.”

Similar to modern “no-stitch,” “no-needle” “no eye patch” cataract surgery, the procedure used to implant crystalens™ is simple and allows for relatively fast healing. After a small incision is made at the edge of the cornea, the lens is vaporized and the crystalens™ is implanted. Newport Beach doctor Gregg Feinerman usually completes the surgery without stitches and in about 15 minutes. Patients do not have to wear an eye patch after the procedure.
The recovery period is usually short. After receiving crystalens™ implants, most Orange County residents are able to pursue normal activities almost immediately after surgery. Patients will have a presbyopia treatment follow-up visit scheduled with Newport Beach doctor Gregg Feinerman to evaluate the success of the surgery.
Patients can generally expect that their crystalens™ implants will immediately improve the quality of their lives. They usually will experience far greater focus while doing such things as driving, watching TV, reading newspapers and recipes, sewing, and putting on makeup. After undergoing crystalens™ presbyopia treatment, most Newport Beach-area patients report decreased dependency on glasses and contacts!
Our patients who golf generally love crystalens because it allows them to follow the ball better and read their score card.” Gregg Feinerman MD, FACS”
Understanding the Crystalens® Accommodative Intraocular Lens
As previously mentioned, the crystalens accommodating intraocular lens is an intraocular lens used after cataract surgery or as a lens alternative in presbyopic lens exchange. The concept of the lens was engineered with a hinge design to allow the optic, or part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as your focus on an image changes. The crystalens accommodative intraocular lens is permanently implanted with a surgical process and functions in a similar fashion as the natural lens. Once the surgery has been completed your eyes can generally focus on far or near objects comfortably. If you are experiencing presbyopia or cataracts please feel free to consult with us about the possibility of utilizing the crystalens accommodative intraocular lens.
