5 Tips for Achieving Better Eye Health in 2018

new year | Feinerman Los Angeles

2017 is quickly coming to a close, which means it’s that time of year when everyone begins thinking about their New Year’s Resolutions. So why not start thinking about how you can achieve better eye health in the coming year?

Your vision plays a crucial role in your daily life so maintaining good vision should be a top priority. Here are five tips for achieving better eye health in 2018:

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Did you know that your lifestyle choices play a role in overall eye health? There is nothing better than eating dark, leafy greens to help you maintain long-term eye health.

And research has also shown that a diet rich in omega 3’s can benefit your eyes as well. And by maintaining a healthy weight you will be at less risk of developing diabetes and other serious conditions that can lead to vision loss.

  • Get yearly eye exams

We can’t talk about eye health without mentioning how important yearly eye exams are. Preventative care is the best way to take care of yourself so make sure you stay on top of your yearly checkups.

You should also make sure you are familiar with your family’s medical history. That way you can let your doctor if there is a history of eye diseases like glaucoma or cataracts.

  • Break out the sunglasses

Long-term exposure to the sun’s UV rays can damage your eyes and put you at increased risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Getting fresh air is important but protecting your vision is too. Make sure you wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat anytime you spend time outdoors.

  • Take a digital detox

Did you know that 93 percent of Americans spend over two hours a day on digital devices, causing something known as eye strain? Eye strain can cause headaches, irritated eyes, and blurred vision.

Try to periodically give yourself a detox from your digital devices. If you regularly use a computer or laptop for work, make sure to take plenty of breaks to give your eyes time to rest.

  • Consider having LASIK surgery

And if you really want to improve your vision in 2018, you should consider having LASIK surgery. LASIK is a quick, painless procedure with a relatively short recovery time. And best of all, you can finally ditch your glasses or contacts for good and enjoy the benefits of having clearer vision.
