5 Things to Consider when Choosing a Cataract Surgeon

July 24th, 2017

choosing a cataract surgeon

Being diagnosed with cataracts can feel overwhelming, especially since the only long-term treatment for cataracts is surgery. Fortunately, cataract surgery is a common procedure and finding an experienced, successful surgeon will greatly improve your odds for success.

If you are considering cataract surgery, choosing the right surgeon may feel like a daunting task. There are seemingly endless options to choose from so you how do you pick the person with the right experience?

To help guide you in the right direction, here are five things to consider when choosing a cataract surgeon:

  • Choose a surgeon who is board certified

Finding a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) is the most basic requirement you should look for. The ABO has high standards doctors must meet in order to be certified.

  • Ask for referrals from trusted friends and family members

Although surgery may seem scary, cataract surgery is a surprisingly common procedure. The odds are that you already know someone who has undergone cataract surgery. Speak with family members and friends you trust and see if they have anyone they can refer you to.

  • Read online reviews

Online reviews can be a helpful way to figure out what experience other patients have had with that doctor. One caveat with online reviews: they are given by strangers and are not always completely objective. So while you should take them into consideration, they should not be overly relied upon.

  • Look for someone who uses the most advanced technology

The type of technology your doctor uses should be a key factor in your decision-making process. Laser cataract surgery is currently the most technologically advanced option available for cataract patients. Ideally, the person you choose should have a great success record using laser cataract surgery with their patients.

  • Consult with the surgeon first

It is incredibly important to schedule a consultation with your doctor first. This will give you a sense of what that person is like and give you an opportunity to ask questions.

Dr. Feinerman is a leader in cataract surgery and was one of the first doctors in Orange County to begin offering laser cataract surgery. Click here to learn more about Dr. Feinerman or to schedule your consultation today.

The 5 Most Commonly Asked Questions About LASIK Surgery

July 14th, 2017

You’ve thought about it for years, you’ve heard how easy the procedure is, but you are still on the fence as to whether LASIK surgery is right for you. We completely understand; the decision to have LASIK is a big one and should not be taken lightly.

At Feinerman Vision, we believe that knowledge is the more empowering way to overcome your fears. So here are our answers to the five most commonly asked questions about LASIK surgery:

  • Is LASIK surgery painful?

Before your surgery, Dr. Feinerman will give you numbing eye drops so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. You may feel some pressure on your eyes during the procedure but no pain. After the procedure is over, your eyes will be very sensitive to light during the recovery period.

  • Am I a good candidate for LASIK if I have astigmatism?

Most likely, and in the majority of cases, LASIK can permanently correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is a very common problem and can be corrected by LASIK just like nearsightedness or farsightedness.

  • Will the results of LASIK wear off over time?

No, the changes made by LASIK are permanent. In roughly five percent of cases, patients can develop slight changes to their eyes that require a LASIK enhancement procedure. But for most people, the results of LASIK will last decades.

  • How long will the procedure take?

LASIK is an extremely short procedure, so you can plan on roughly two hours from start to finish. You will be in surgery for about twenty minutes and the actual laser treatment takes about a minute per eye.

  • Will it take me a long time to recover from LASIK?

No, the short recovery time is one of the biggest benefits of LASIK. Many patients return to their normal activities the next day. You can expect some sensitivity to light and a complete recovery can take up to six months depending on the patient. But many patients acquire normal vision within a week of LASIK.
