Types of Focusing Problems

Clear vision occurs only when light rays entering the eye are precisely focused by both the cornea and the lens, and then processed by the retina. If focus is off at any step along the way, blurry vision will result. Fortunately, Dr. Gregg Feinerman performs various types of laser eye surgery at his Newport Beach office, all designed to correct different refractive errors.

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Nearsightedness is the most common optical problem in the United States, affecting more than 25 percent of Americans. Because they are too long in relation to the focusing power of their corneas and lenses, nearsighted patients’ eyes focus images at a point in front of the surface of the retina, and have trouble focusing on images that are far away. A LASIK laser eye surgery procedure at the Orange County office of Dr. Feinerman would reshape the cornea and allow light rays to focus correctly on the retina.

Farsightedness (Hyperopia)

Farsightedness affects approximately one in 10 people and is caused by an eye that is too short for the lens and cornea to focus properly. When they are young, many patients who would otherwise be farsighted are able to naturally compensate for the shortness of their eye by simply using the eye’s lens more effectively. Later in life, the natural flexibility of the lens is lost, and objects close to the eyes become blurry.

In the case of farsightedness, Dr. Feinerman would steepen the cornea’s shape using laser eye surgery at his Newport Beach, Orange County office. This causes the focusing point in the eye to move forward and coincide with the surface of the retina.

Astigmatism

The ideal eye is completely spherical and allows for the precise focus of all light rays entering the eye. Of course, no one has perfect eyes; rather, the eye may curve more steeply in one direction than another, resulting in astigmatism.

Astigmatism is a condition in which the eye cannot focus clearly on an object, no matter what the distance, because it is receiving mixed signals from the different curvatures of the corneal surface.

It is common to see astigmatism associated with both nearsightedness and farsightedness. Astigmatism can disrupt a patient’s everyday life and needs to be addressed. The Feinerman Vision Center offers Zyoptix™ and CustomCornea® laser eye surgery that can restore vision to Newport Beach and Orange County candidates who qualify for laser vision correction.

Presbyopia

When the eye is young, its lens is flexible and strong, permitting it to change shape as needed to focus at various distances. As the eye ages, however, the lens loses its pliability and is no longer able to focus clearly on objects near the eye. Even people with previously “perfect” vision tend to need reading glasses at around the age of 45.

LASIK and PRK cannot correct presbyopia. However, a new technology called crystalens™ is a revolutionary lens-replacement option that restores near and far vision to people suffering from presbyopia.

Dr. Feinerman was the first eye surgeon in Orange County to become fully certified in this new surgery. He is also one of a few select surgeons who are able to offer this procedure as an alternative to laser eye surgery to his Newport Beach patients. Since it was approved by the FDA in November 2003, Dr. Feinerman has performed more crystalens™ procedures than any other doctor in the United States, and remains one of the few surgeons who is able to offer this revolutionary treatment to his patients.

About crystalens™, Dr. Gregg Feinerman says, "Finally we are able to provide patients the ability to be less dependent on glasses or contact lenses for both distance and near vision."
