Verisyse™ as an Alternative to LASIK
Over the last several years, laser eye correction has been advertised as a viable solution for just about anyone. However, this is not always the case. For patients who have thin or irregular corneas and are not eligible for LASIK at our Newport Beach office, Orange County doctor Gregg Feinerman offers an alternative called Verisyse™.
Verisyse™ is a phakic intraocular lens (IOL), meaning that it is implanted in the eye to supplement the focusing abilities of the natural lens. This method is ideal for patients who have one of several conditions:
Patients in these categories may have their corneas damaged if they attempt to undergo LASIK. Residents of Newport Beach and surrounding areas who come to Dr. Feinerman for a consultation may find that their needs are better served by Verisyse™ phakic IOLs.
The Verisyse™ phakic IOL is a small plastic lens, about 5mm across, that is implanted behind the cornea. This procedure varies from other lens-enhancement procedures like crystalens™ in that the eye’s natural lens remains in place. The Verisyse™ implant simply enhances the focus of the existing lens to create clear vision.
To implant the Verisyse™, Dr. Feinerman will anesthetize the eye and make a small incision in the cornea, through which he will fit the IOL. He will then fasten the implant in place and suture closed the incision. The procedure usually takes about 20 minutes and much like LASIK, our Orange County patients can expect to be back to work the next day. There is a one- or two-week wait between treatment of each eye; Dr. Feinerman likes to implant one Verisyse™ implant at a time to make sure the eye reacts properly and that the patient likes the new implant.

Though the vast majority of patients receiving Verisyse™ implants are very pleased with their vision improvement, candidates may be reassured to know that the procedure is completely reversible. If their prescription changes or they develop cataracts, the Verisyse™ implant can be replaced or removed in order to implement alternative vision correction measures.

Visian ICL®
New Procedure Now Available For Those Unsuitable For Lasik
Those who have been wanting to rid themselves of glasses and/or contact lenses, yet have been declared "unsuitable" for the popular LASIK vision correction procedure, have newfound hope thanks to a new procedure. FVC is among the first in the nation to perform the Visian ICL®, which recently received FDA approval. The procedure involves surgically inserting a special contact lens inside the eye to offer patients life without dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Visian ICL® is best suited for people who have thin corneas or prescriptions that reduce them to wearing "coke bottle glasses," making the LASIK procedure either too dangerous or impractical to perform. One major advantage of the Visian ICL® over the Veriseye™ implantable lens is that it can be injected through a much smaller incision, and therefore does not require sutures. Dr. Feinerman offers the Visian ICL® as an excellent alternative for patients with extreme nearsightedness, extreme farsightedness, and special conditions.
This simple procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Dr. Feinerman makes a small incision in the cornea and inserts the foldable lens between the iris and the natural crystalline lens. The procedure takes only 15 to 30 minutes for each eye and only requires topical anesthesia (numbing eye drops). Typically, patients can see clearly within a few hours after the procedure.
Because of the positioning of the Visian ICL®, it is invisible to the patient and others. Another added benefit with the Visian ICL® is that it avoids contact with other eye structures, providing safety, stability, comfort, and predictable outcomes. Once in place, the lens stays in place indefinitely and should require no maintenance.
The Visian ICL® lens is made of an advanced material called Collamer® that provides exceptionally clear vision and practically eliminates reflectance of light that can cause glare, halos, and compromised night vision. A highly biocompatible material, Collamer® does not trigger an inflammatory response in the body and minimizes the occurrence of inflammation, induced astigmatism and other complications.
More than 50,000 patients worldwide have undergone the Visian ICL® procedure. The lenses have been subjected to numerous scientific studies and continuing refinement over time. In a rigorous U.S. clinical trial, the satisfaction rate among patients was impressive: 99.4 percent reported satisfaction three years after the procedure.
